Casa do Menor Project

Munson's has supported a number of charities over the years, donations generously given by our guests. Last years nominated charity (2002) was Friends of the Earth where £644 was raised. Munson's chosen charity for this year is Casa Do Menor Project,' The Forgotten Children of Brazil'. This cause was brought to our attention by our good friends Paola Bellussi & Greg Fitzgerald. Help the forgotten children of Brazil - Casa do Menor

Renato Chiera is a missionary Priest who went to Brazil in 1978. He settled in one of the poorest, most violent and problematic places in the world on the outskirts of Rio (The Baixada Fluminese, Nova Iguacu). In this new reality he found himself celebrating mostly funerals!! Something had to be done. Renato’s house became the home for the ‘undesirable’ children of Brazil. The children chased by the ‘death squads.’ They had nowhere to go so they went to him. The child prostitutes that could no longer face their fate went there too. More and more children and young teenagers knocked on the Door of Father Renato and he could not turn them away. Where would they go? So the CASA DO MENOR PROJECT was born.

The aim of the Casa do Menor is to raise awareness and funding in the “rich” countries of the world to help the children that suffer starvation and abuses in one of the largest countries in South America. Casa do Menor provides a home for the forgotten children of Brazil; moreover it also runs schools and laboratories offering professional courses. The ex street children are given a chance in life. When they leave the Casa do Menor they are able to support themselves and become a constructive part of society. Two years ago a new project was founded: the creation of three new homes to welcome the growing children of the Favelas and a new Laboratory that offers five new professional courses. One of the houses costs £30.000 so even £1 can help towards funding this ambitious project.
